Finally, somebody cares. The University Board of Regents are considering a ban to fast food on campus. In addition, the university is working with College Park officials to implement a similar in College Park, MD.
From walking around campus, it is easy to see that fast food has left a mark on the student body, literally. This trend is not limited to this campus, this city, or this county but more so this country.
Many way wonder why fast food restaurants have such an appeal to college aged kids especially. It may be attributed to: cheap cost, dependability, speed, or the gravitational pull towards these places after a night of inebriation.
President Mote stood behind the idea and stated that "we take our students health seriously, much the same way we have rules and regulations around smoking and alcohol consumption, we need to have rules about healthy eating options".
The University is making it clear that they care about their students health. Health plays a large factor into how people feel about themselves. They board is picking up the slack where most parents leave off.
Imagine the possibilities! A fast food can open the door to a very bright future for students and faculty, alike. Gone are the days of greasy fries and stomach aches. Gone are the days of spending your last bit of spare change on a hamburger shaped heart attack. Gone are the days of the declining self-image. And gone are the days of cheap dates. Goodbye McDonalds, Hello Morton's.
This news comes much to the chagrin of the student population, Jimmy Smith, a junior at the University of Maryland, protested that "this blows. I thought we were in the United States of America...we should be able to eat what we want".
